Dark inner thighs and underarms,
evened out.
Dark inner thighs and underarms are very common, especially on melanin-rich skin, and they're nothing to be embarrassed about. If they bother you, the plan is to stop what's causing them and fade what's there, gently.
Friction pigmentation is darkening where skin rubs or folds, like the inner thighs, underarms, bikini line and neck. Friction, shaving, waxing and irritating products are common causes. Darkening in folds can also signal a condition like insulin resistance, so PSRx screens first. Treatment combines removing triggers, skincare, in-office care and laser hair reduction to stop shaving irritation.
Where skin rubs,
pigment builds.
Friction darkening usually has more than one cause. Finding all of them is how results last.
If darkening is velvety, thick or spreading, we'll recommend a check with your physician alongside any skin treatment.
Who it's for —
and who it isn’t.

Friction Pigmentation FAQ.
Why are my inner thighs darker?
Inner thighs usually darken from friction, sweat, tight clothing, shaving or waxing, which inflame the skin and trigger extra pigment. It's very common, especially on darker skin. Sometimes velvety darkening can signal insulin resistance, so we screen for that at consultation.
Can dark underarms be lightened?
Yes, dark underarms can often be lightened by stopping the cause and gently fading the pigment. Shaving irritation and some deodorants are common triggers. Laser hair reduction can help a lot by removing the need to shave, along with brightening skincare and Precise Peels.
Is dark skin in folds a sign of diabetes?
Velvety, thick darkening in the neck, underarms or groin, called acanthosis nigricans, can be linked to insulin resistance or prediabetes. Not all fold darkening means this, but it's worth checking. PSRx screens for these signs and refers you to a physician when needed.
Will laser hair removal help dark underarms?
Laser hair reduction often helps dark underarms and bikini lines, because it removes repeated shaving and waxing, a major cause of irritation and dark marks. The Nd:YAG 1064nm laser is designed for darker skin. Pigment treatment can then fade what's left.
How long does friction pigmentation take to fade?
Friction pigmentation fades gradually, usually over months, and only once the friction or irritation causing it is reduced. Consistent home care makes a big difference to how fast it fades. Your provider will set realistic expectations at consultation based on the area and the cause.
What products should I avoid on dark underarms?
Avoid harsh scrubs, fragranced deodorants and products that sting or burn, because irritation adds pigment. Some home lightening products can also damage skin or make darkening worse. Your provider will recommend gentle products and a routine suited to your skin and the area.
