Laser treatment for darker skin,
from the clinic that trains other providers.
Darker skin holds more melanin, and melanin absorbs laser energy. With the wrong provider, that can mean dark patches, light spots or scarring. PSRx was built around Fitzpatrick IV–VI from the start, so every plan begins with your skin type, not a default.
Laser can be safe on Black and brown skin when the device, energy and pacing are chosen by a provider trained for darker skin. PSRx is an industry leader in laser and skin treatment for Fitzpatrick IV–VI, and other providers train with us through Precise Institute. Every plan is built for your skin type, from consultation to aftercare.
Why darker skin
needs an expert.
Most laser complications in darker skin are preventable. They usually come from a device, energy level or pace that wasn't chosen for the patient's skin type.
If a past treatment left you with dark or light patches, our Corrective Treatment pathway is built for you.
How we keep
darker skin safe.
Safe laser on darker skin comes down to the right technology, the right plan and the patience to pace it. PSRx is an industry leader in exactly this, and our clinical team writes the provider guides other clinics use, including Laser Safety for Fitzpatrick IV–VI.
- ✦Skin typing at every consultation, so your plan matches your Fitzpatrick type.
- ✦Wavelengths chosen to reach the target while sparing surface pigment.
- ✦Careful pacing between sessions so skin settles before the next step.

Skin of Color Laser Treatments FAQ.
Is laser safe for Black skin?
Yes, laser can be safe for Black skin when the provider uses the right technology and is trained for darker skin. The risks, mainly dark patches, light spots and scarring, come from the wrong wavelength, too much heat or rushed sessions. PSRx builds every plan around your skin type and trains other providers in exactly this.
Which laser is best for dark skin?
For many treatments on darker skin, a longer wavelength like the Nd:YAG 1064nm laser is the safest starting point, because it passes surface pigment. The best choice still depends on what's being treated: hair, pigment, scars or tattoo ink. Your provider chooses the device after examining your skin, not before.
Why did my last laser treatment leave dark spots?
Dark spots after laser are usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, your skin's reaction to heat or irritation. It's more common in darker skin, especially after a mismatched device, too much energy or sun exposure during healing. Many cases fade with time and the right care. We evaluate these cases carefully and tell you honestly what can be improved.
What is Fitzpatrick skin type?
The Fitzpatrick scale groups skin into six types, I through VI, based on how it reacts to the sun. Types IV–VI are olive, brown and deep brown skin that rarely burns. Your type guides which devices, treatments and aftercare are safe for you, so we assess it at every consultation.
Do I need a consultation before laser treatment?
Yes, every laser plan at PSRx starts with a consultation. We assess your skin type, medical history, medications and goals, then build a plan around them. Consultations are paid, and they're the most important step in keeping darker skin safe during treatment.
How do I prepare my skin for laser?
Most laser plans start with sun avoidance, because a recent tan raises the risk of dark patches on darker skin. You may also need to pause certain skincare products before treatment. Your provider gives you a written prep plan that matches your treatment and your skin type.
