Surgical and injury scars,
softened with care.

A surgical scar can be a reminder you'd rather not see every day. Treatment can soften its texture, flatten it and even out its color. Every plan starts with making sure your skin has healed and that treatment is safe for your skin tone.

In Short

Surgical and traumatic scars are scars left by surgery, like a C-section, tummy tuck or breast surgery, or by an injury, cut or burn. PSRx treats them with fractional CO2 and Erbium lasers, RF, subcision and Ellacor, chosen for the scar and your skin type. Scars must be fully healed first, and most improve gradually over a series.

Know What You Have

Every scar
tells a different story.

Where a scar is and how it formed shapes how it's treated. These are the scars we see most.

C-section scars
Low, horizontal scars that can be raised, indented, darker than the skin around them, or tight. Some form a small overhang. Each feature is treated a little differently.
Tummy tuck scars
Long scars across the lower belly, sometimes with a scar around the belly button. They can widen, darken or stay raised, especially on melanin-rich skin.
Breast surgery scars
Scars from augmentation, reduction or lift surgery, often around the areola or under the breast. They can be flat, raised or darker than the surrounding skin.
Other surgical scars
Scars from any other procedure, from small incisions to longer repairs. The plan depends on the scar's size, texture, color and how long ago surgery was.
Injury and burn scars
Scars from cuts, accidents or burns can be uneven, tight, raised or dented. They often need a combination of treatments to improve texture and color.

Raised scars that keep growing beyond the original wound may be keloids, which need a separate, careful approach.

Screening First

We look closely
before we treat.

Scar treatment starts by confirming your skin has healed and that treatment is safe for you.

What we check
✦When and how the scar formed
✦Whether the wound has fully healed
✦Your surgeon's clearance for surgical scars
✦Personal or family history of keloids
✦Your skin type and past reactions to treatment
When we refer you to a physician
→Signs of infection or a wound that hasn't healed
→A scar that is painful, growing quickly or changing
→Concerns that need your surgeon's review
Melanin-Safe Protocols

Scar care for darker skin
takes a careful hand.

Darker skin is more likely to form raised scars and dark marks while it heals, so aggressive scar treatment can backfire. PSRx is an industry leader in laser and skin treatment for Fitzpatrick IV–VI, and other providers train with us to learn exactly this.

  • ✦Every plan is built around your Fitzpatrick type and keloid history.
  • ✦Treatments are chosen to improve the scar while protecting your natural pigment.
  • ✦Sessions are paced so your skin fully recovers before the next step.
  • ✦We train and certify other providers in laser care for Fitzpatrick I–VI.
How We Treat It

The right tool
for each part of the scar.

Most scars have more than one problem, like texture and color. Your plan combines the treatments that fit your scar and skin.

Fractional CO2 laser
Resurfaces the skin and stimulates new collagen to soften raised edges, smooth texture and help blend the scar into the skin around it. It's used with expert care on darker skin to protect your pigment.
Erbium laser
Resurfaces with precise control and typically less heat than CO2, which can make it a good fit for some darker skin types. It helps smooth texture and soften scar edges.
RF (radiofrequency)
Delivers energy beneath the surface to remodel collagen with less disruption to the top layer of skin. It can help soften firm scars and improve texture, and it's often well suited to darker skin types.
Subcision
Releases bands of tissue that tether an indented scar to the layers below, so the skin can lift and look smoother. It's helpful for dented or puckered scars, including some C-section and injury scars.
Ellacor
Removes tiny cores of skin to stimulate remodeling as the skin heals. It's used in our protocols for certain scars, and whether it fits your skin is decided at consultation.

Common Questions

Surgical & Traumatic Scars FAQ.

Can a C-section scar be treated?

Yes, C-section scars can often be softened, flattened and evened out in color. The right treatment depends on whether your scar is raised, indented, tight or darker than the skin around it. Your scar must be fully healed first, and we'll talk through timing with you at consultation.

How long after surgery can I treat my scar?

Your scar needs to be fully healed before treatment, and surgical scars may need your surgeon's clearance. The right timing depends on the surgery and how your skin has healed. Your provider will look at your scar and confirm when it's safe to start at your consultation.

Can I treat my scar while breastfeeding?

Tell your provider if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, because it affects which treatments are appropriate and when. Many people wait until after breastfeeding to start scar treatment. We'll plan your timing together at consultation so you can start when it's right for you.

What is Ellacor?

Ellacor is a treatment that removes tiny cores of skin, which prompts the skin to rebuild and tighten as it heals. At PSRx, it's used in our protocols for certain scars. Whether Ellacor is a good fit for your scar and skin type is decided at consultation.

Is laser scar treatment safe on dark skin?

Laser scar treatment can be safe on dark skin with the right device, careful pacing and a provider trained for Fitzpatrick IV–VI. The main risk is dark patches when treatment is too aggressive. PSRx plans every session around your skin type and includes prep and aftercare to protect your pigment.

How many treatments will my scar need?

Most scars need a series of treatments, and the number depends on the scar's size, age, texture and color, plus your skin. Your provider will estimate a plan for you at consultation and adjust it as your scar responds over time.
