Tattoo removal on dark skin,
done safely.

On Black and brown skin, laser settings built for lighter skin can leave dark patches, light patches or scarring. PSRx uses Precise Pico picosecond technology with settings adjusted for Fitzpatrick IV–VI — so the ink goes and your skin tone stays.

The Risks

Why dark skin needs
a different protocol.

In melanin-rich skin, the skin's own pigment competes with the tattoo ink for laser energy. With the wrong laser or settings, that extra energy causes these problems.

Dark Patches (PIH)
Heat stimulates the pigment cells around the tattoo, leaving dark patches that can outlast the tattoo itself.
Light Patches
Poorly calibrated treatment can lighten the skin where the tattoo was — and on deeper skin, a light patch is highly visible.
Texture Changes & Scarring
Too much heat, sessions too close together or very deep ink raise the risk of texture changes or scarring.

These are not reasons to avoid removal — they are reasons to choose a provider who adjusts for your skin tone.

Melanin-Safe Protocols

How we protect
your skin tone.

Safe removal on deeper skin comes down to the right technology, the right settings, and checking how your skin responds at every visit.

  • ✦Precise Pico picosecond pulses shatter ink with a pressure wave rather than heat — less stimulation of the pigment cells around the tattoo
  • ✦1064nm wavelength for dark inks, which reaches the ink while limiting absorption by the skin's surface pigment
  • ✦Conservative starting energy, adjusted for Fitzpatrick IV–VI
  • ✦Sessions spaced further apart on types V and VI so your skin fully recovers
Your Treatment

What removal looks like
on deeper skin.

Every plan is built at your consultation around your ink, your skin tone and your goals.

Precise Pico Picosecond Laser
Pulses about 1,000 times faster than older Q-switch lasers shatter ink into smaller particles with less heat — clearing in fewer sessions with a lower risk of darkening.
Every Ink Color
Multiple wavelengths target black, red, blue, green and orange inks. Lighter colors are planned carefully, because some wavelengths carry more risk on deeper skin.
Skin Prep When Needed
Some protocols start with melanin-stabilizing topicals before treatment to lower the risk of reactive darkening.
Aftercare That Protects Your Tone
Healing ointment, no picking, and daily SPF 50 once healed — sun on a healing site is one of the most reliable ways to cause a dark patch.
Progress Photos Every Visit
We photograph and assess at each appointment, so you can see the progress build and any change in pigment is caught early.
Cover-Up Lightening
Planning new ink? Strategic lightening — typically 2–4 sessions — gives your artist a cleaner canvas without full removal.
What To Expect

From consultation
to clear skin.

01
Consultation & Assessment
We evaluate your Fitzpatrick type, ink density and colors, placement, and any history of keloids or dark marks.
02
Your Plan
You get a realistic session range, with settings and spacing chosen for your skin tone — not a generic calendar.
03
Treatment Sessions
Numbing cream first; most sessions take about 15 minutes. Sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart, sometimes longer on types V and VI.
04
Heal & Protect
Your body clears the ink between visits. Keep the area out of the sun and apply SPF 50 daily once healed.
Common Questions

Tattoo removal on dark skin FAQ.

Is laser tattoo removal safe on Black skin?

Yes, with the right technology and settings. Picosecond lasers like Precise Pico produce less heat than older Q-switch lasers, which lowers the risk of dark or light patches, and PSRx adjusts settings and session spacing for Fitzpatrick IV–VI.

Will tattoo removal leave a dark or light spot on my skin?

For most clients, the skin looks normal after removal. The risk of dark patches (PIH) or light patches rises with heat-heavy lasers, settings built for lighter skin, sessions too close together and sun on healing skin — all things your plan is built to avoid.

What's the difference between Precise Pico and a Q-switch laser?

Both shatter ink, but Precise Pico delivers energy about 1,000 times faster. That creates a pressure wave instead of heat, breaking ink into smaller particles with less heat in the surrounding skin — which matters most on deeper skin tones.

Can colored ink be removed from dark skin?

Black and dark blue inks respond most predictably. Reds, greens, blues and yellows need specific wavelengths, and some carry more risk on melanin-rich skin, so each color is assessed and planned on its own.

Why are my sessions spaced further apart?

Your immune system needs 6–8 weeks to clear the shattered ink, and deeper skin tones may need extra time to fully recover before the next session. Rushing sessions is one of the most common causes of permanent discoloration.

What should I ask a tattoo removal provider?

Ask which laser and wavelength they will use for your skin tone, how they adjust settings for Fitzpatrick V or VI, how they manage the risk of dark marks, and to see results on skin like yours.
